To detect and clean the external storage disk using DiskPart Command line:
- Open Command Prompt (Windows button+R) and choose Run as Administrator.
- type "diskpart" and hit Enter.
- At the DiskPart prompt, type "list disk". This will list all the hard drives in the system.
| Note | The free space indicated in DiskPart means "space that is available for use on the drive but which does not have a volume defined." Thus, If there were a volume defined on this drive it would likely show zero free space. You can check if the external storage drive doesn't show from the list of disks corresponds to the size of the External storage that plugged. |
- If the system detects a disk that matches the size of the external storage drive, type sel disk + the number of the disk that corresponds from the list disk result. Example: sel disk 1.
- At the DiskPart prompt, type clean and hit Enter. You will not be given a chance to opt out.
| Note | Make absolutely certain you have selected the correct disk. If you have selected a drive that contains data that you want to keep and you proceed beyond this point, that data will be erased. |
- If you type list disk again, you will see that the disk that was cleaned now shows all space on the drive free. That means there are no volumes defined on that drive.
- You can create a volume using windows Disk Management and Assign a letter on the volume that will be shown on Devices and Drives.
