Combining excellent performance with great looks and a broad feature set at a price point that is perfect for those who want a little more than a basic motherboard but can't stretch to one of the premium models, the ASUS ROG X570 Strix-E is another successful entry into the Strix range. more

    Bang for Buck

I think this one is a bit of a sweet spot for most system builders. It has a great design and decent build quality overall. As part of the TUF alliance, it's got great compatibility, and should be priced fairly reasonably too. For an entry to gaming on X570, it's a great place to get started. more

    Gamer's Choice

If it was based on looks alone, I won't stop you, as the Crosshair VIII Hero looks truly stunning from top to bottom. The winners for me though as the superb audio hardware, which can drive high-end audio devices with some serious processing power. If you care about overclocking but want to take out a lot of the stress of it, their 5-way optimisation system is in a league of its own these days too. more

    ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha

    Enthusiast Grade

“All in all the revised ASUS X399 ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha is a triumph. It would be easy enough for ASUS to have decided that the original Zenith Extreme did well enough and leave any revisions for a future model, but instead they have taken on board the needs of the high end, extreme performance enthusiasts and fixed a weakness until it's a definite strength. You need a serious amount of cash to build a system that would make fullest use of what the Zenith Extreme Alpha can bring to the party, but if you do then you'll be pleased to note it is never found wanting. Shut up MEG, the Zenith is back on top.” more

    Performance

“The original Rampage VI Extreme was hardly a bad board by any stretch of the imagination full of connectivity options and high end features but the Omega adopts all of the best that ASUS has to offer and adds upgraded AURA Sync RGB lighting and better power phases to the mix to leave us with a Motherboard that is deserving of being part of the Republic of Gamers family and guaranteed not to be the limiting factor in any of your overclocking efforts. It's expensive, sure, but hugely impressive. It's the Motherboard Harrods would sell you. Its the Bugatti of Motherboards. You might not need it, but hell. You know you want it.” more

“The same isn't true for the RGB lighting, though, where Asus rules supreme, plus you get 10 Gigabit Ethernet too. As a result, we can't say one is substantially better than the other - it will likely come down to personal choice. With a £50 lower price, the MSI board is perhaps better value, but we can see plenty of reasons why you'd still want the Asus ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha to sit at the heart of your Threadripper system.” more

    TUF Z390-PLUS GAMING (WI-FI)

    RECOMMENDED

“Ultimately the price difference largely accounts for the extra hardware offered by the Asus board, namely Wi-Fi and a better audio processor, so there's actually very little difference between the two unless USB 3.1 is a priority - MSI wins easily there. Still, with solid performance and overclocking too, we can definitely recommend the Asus TUF Z390-Plus Gaming (Wi-Fi), and it's worth noting that the non-WiFi version retails for a more reasonable £140 too.” more

    EXTREME AWARD

“What it has delivered is exactly what many of us wanted - a flagship board that overclocks like a trooper and makes you go 'phwoar!', but Asus hasn't just included features for the sake of it - they're genuinely useful for both extreme overclockers and those looking to splash a couple of grand or more on a PC designed to turn heads. The ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming had hints of this, but the new Gene hits the nail on the head - so much so that we don't really care how much it is, we just want one, and that's exactly the feeling a true ROG board should inspire.” more
