[Range Extender] How to Update the Firmware on Your RP-AX50 Repeater?
Introduction
Keeping your RP-AX50 repeater's firmware up-to-date is crucial for optimal performance, enhanced security, and access to the latest features and improvements. This FAQ provides two distinct methods for updating your RP-AX50's firmware: manually uploading a downloaded firmware file, and checking for new firmware directly from the device's web interface. Choose the method that best suits your needs.
Method 1: Manual Firmware Update (Uploading a Downloaded File)
This method involves downloading the latest firmware file from the ASUS support website and then manually uploading it through the RP-AX50's web interface.
Step 1: Download the Latest Firmware
Visit the official ASUS support website for the RP-AX50: https://www.asus.com/networking-iot-servers/range-extenders/all-series/rp-ax50/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=RP-AX50. Locate the latest firmware version under the [BIOS & FIRMWARE] section and click the [DOWNLOAD] button to save the firmware file to your computer.
Step 2: Log in to the RP-AX50 Web Interface
Open a web browser on a device connected to your RP-AX50 (either wired or wirelessly). Enter the RP-AX50's IP address (e.g., http://192.168.72.1 by default or http://repeater.asus.com) into the address bar and press Enter. Log in using your administrator password.
Step 3: Navigate to the [Upgrade] Section
From the main dashboard, navigate to Management and then select Upgrade from the dropdown menu.

Step 4: Select the Firmware File
On the [Upgrade] page, under the [Upgrade Manually] section, click the [Select File] button.

Step 5: Choose and Confirm Firmware File
A file selection dialog will appear. Navigate to the location where you saved the downloaded firmware file (e.g., ASUS_RP-AX50_V3.0.0.14_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.aes), select it, and click [Open]t o confirm your selection.
Step 6: Upload the Firmware
After selecting the file, the filename will appear next to the [Select File] button. Click the[Upload] button to begin the firmware upload process.
Step 7: Confirm Firmware Upgrade
A reminder window will appear, asking [Do you want to upgrade Firmware?]. Click[ OK] to confirm and proceed with the upgrade.
Step 8: Wait for Countdown and Reboot
The device will display a progress bar or a countdown timer. Wait for the countdown to finish, and then allow approximately two additional minutes for the RP-AX50 to automatically restart. Once it has fully rebooted, the firmware update process is complete.
Method 2: Online Firmware Update (Checking for New Firmware)
This method allows the RP-AX50 to automatically check for and download the latest firmware directly from ASUS servers.
Steps 1-3: Log in and Navigate to [Upgrade] Section
Follow Steps 2 and 3 from Method 1 above to log in to the RP-AX50 web interface and navigate to the [Management] -> [Upgrade] section.
Step 4: Check for New Firmware
On the [Upgrade] page, under the [Firmware] section, click the [Check for New Firmware] button.
Step 5: Follow On-Screen Instructions
If a new firmware version is available, the system will prompt you to download and install it. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update. This will typically involve confirming the download, allowing the device to install the firmware, and then automatically rebooting.
Step 6: Wait for Completion and Reboot
Similar to the manual update, the device will display a progress indicator or countdown during the update and then automatically reboot. Allow the process to complete fully.
Important Note: During any firmware update process, do not power off or disconnect your RP-AX50. Interrupting the update can corrupt the firmware and render the device inoperable.
