[WAN] How to enable WAN Aggregation on ASUS router?

WAN Aggregation combines two Gigabit networks to increase the bandwidth up to 2 Gigabits. When your ISP or LAN devices provide two network connection sources with LACP-IEEE 802.3ad (LAN Aggregation) support, you can use WAN Aggregation function in your ASUS router to get faster WAN transfer speed.

Take below as an example, ISP modem connect to RT-AX88U's WAN port and LAN4 port via two 1G Ethernet cables, and RT-AX88U get 2G WAN after enabling WAN aggregation.

Note1: Please note that the modem connected to your ASUS Router must support LACP-IEEE 802.3ad to make sure WAN Aggregation works. If you are not sure the front modem/router support LACP-IEEE 802.3ad or not, please contact your ISP.

Note2: WAN aggregation only support for Automatic IP and Static IP WAN connection type. If you are not sure the WAN connection type, please contact your ISP.

Note3: Please make sure the two WAN sources are from same ISP and same front modem/router.

The WAN aggregation supported by ASUS wireless routers vary by model, you may refer to the product user manual or the product specifications page to confirm if your router support WAN aggregation or not.

To Set up WAN Aggregation please do follow the steps below:

Set up front modem/router

Set up ASUS router

To connect ASUS router and your modem with Ethernet cables

Note: Please make sure you have enabled the ISP modem LAN aggregation and ASUS WAN aggregation setting before wired connect ISP modem and ASUS router to prevent possible network looping.

The example below takes a ISP modem and RT-AX88U as an example.

Set up front modem/router

1. Connect your computer to the front modem or router that ISP provided and login to your front modem or router. (For how to login the ISP modem or router, please contact your ISP)

2. Enable LACP-IEEE 802.3ad (LAN aggregation)

Set up ASUS router

1. Connect your computer to ASUS router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable then open a web browser and navigate to Web GUI. http://www.asusrouter.com

2. After login, go to Advanced Settings > WAN> Internet Connection, and enable WAN Aggregation in Basic Config by clicking YES.

Note: WAN connection type only supports Automatic IP and Static IP.  If you're not sure the WAN type, please contact your ISP.

3. Click the Apply button.

To connect ASUS router and your modem with Ethernet cables

You need two Ethernet cables with the same specification (either 10/100M or Gigabit).

1. One is connected from WAN port of your ASUS router to the LAN port of modem.

2. The other is connected from modem’s LAN port to ASUS router’s LAN4 port.

Note: ASUS router support to do WAN aggregation with WAN port and LAN4 port only.  Other LAN ports do not support WAN aggregation setting.

3.  While completing the connection, you will see the status of WAN Aggregation on Network Map as below.

FAQ

1. Can I use Dual wan and WAN aggregation at same time?

No, dual WAN and WAN Aggregation cannot be enabled at the same time. If you have enabled one of these functions, the other will be disabled automatically.

2.  Why my IPTV stopped working when I enabled WAN Aggregation?

LAN port 4 is the reserved port for some IPTV service. You cannot use these two services at the same time if your ISP assigns LAN port 4 for IPTV service.

3. Can I enable WAN Aggregation in Access point mode?

No, only Router Mode support WAN aggregation.

4. What is the difference between WAN Aggregation and LAN Aggregation?

WAN Aggregation: it can increase the transfer speed between ISP modem and your router.

LAN Aggregation: It can increase the transfer speed between your router to the devices connect to router, like NAS or a computer with two Ethernet ports.

For example, if all devices in your network environment all support IEEE 802.3ad and WAN aggregation/LAN aggregation and support 2G WAN bandwidth,

If you wish to increase the transfer speed between router and NAS, you can set up LAN aggregation.

If you wish to increase the transfer speed between ISP modem and your router, you can set up WAN aggregation.

If you wish to increase the transfer speed from ISP modem to NAS, please enable both WAN aggregation and LAN aggregation to get 2G transfer speed.

For how to set up LACP in ASUS router, please refer to [Wireless Router] How to setup link aggregation on ASUS router?(Teaming Port/LACP)

5. What should I do if below message show up after WAN aggregation is set up?

If WAN Aggregation setup is not successful, please follow the steps below:

  • Make sure the LAN ports of your modem is connected to your router's WAN and LAN port 4 with cables.
  • Make sure your modem has enabled 802.3ad.
  • Confirm that you use two cables with the same spec. (either Gigabit& Gigabit or 10/100& 10/100Mbps)
  • Please make sure you have enabled the ISP modem LAN aggregation and ASUS WAN aggregation setting before wired connect ISP modem and ASUS router to prevent possible network looping
  • Please make sure the firmware of the router is up to date. For the information of how to upgrade firmware, please refer to [Wireless Router] How to update the firmware of your router to the latest version

If you have tried the steps above but still experience problems, please contact ASUS Product Support for additional assistance.
