OVERVIEW

In working with Mike Bement, the Chaffey Joint Union High School District (CJUHSD) Director of Technology, it is apparent that the culture of support is engrained in this school district from the top down. As Mike puts it; “It’s very important in this culture of the high school district to go alongside in partnership with our teachers”. With close to 25,000 students and 1000 teachers and a need for engaging efficient devices in the classroom, Mike was tasked with looking for the optimal solution. In this Mike faced a significant challenge as they watched a few districts implement new technology and wanted to make sure that not only did they have a relevant infrastructure, but that the devices they brought in were relevant to the teachers and students using them.

    CJUHSD GOALS

    • All CJUHSD students will demonstrate college and career readiness.
    • CJUHSD will provide meaningful professional development in research-based strategies and technology implementation to complement classroom instruction and support increases in student achievement.
    • CJUHSD will provide safe and caring campus environments that engage students in their schools.
    • CJUHSD will provide effective communication and strong relationships with all stakeholders.
    • CJUHSD will provide fiscal solvency and transparency for all stakeholders.

    EVALUATING THEIR OPTIONS

Prior to adopting their current Chromebook solution, Mike and his team had purchased some Chromebooks with a different manufacturer. In addition, they also had wired Windows machines, iPads, and some Mac devices for staff. The school district did not have any specific operating system that they were looking at, rather they had three main criteria with which to base their evaluation: 1) Ruggedized and spill-proof 2) Form-Factor and weight 3) Price-Point. Other criteria including security and ease of use also came into play with the end goal of integrating devices that were going to increase student engagement and complement the standard of learning in the classroom. Most importantly the solution had to adhere to the district’s’ teacher coaching strategy in order to foster success in the classroom. By partnering with their teachers, Mike and his team were able to create a successful environment by taking into account their needs and concerns.

Form-factor, ruggedization and security are features that can significantly raise the price of a device. With that in mind, Mike still had the task of choosing a product that would have a longer lifecycle and last through the rigours of the everyday classroom while continuing to enhance the standard of learning and engagement.

One of the benefits of the ASUS Chromebook C202 is that the design team was able to rely on the feedback of ASUS customers. This led to an easy grip design so that it is proactive in avoiding damage and not just reactive. All of these features: the rugged, 180-degree hinge, TPM security, spill-proof keyboard, easy-grip design, modular design.

    THE SOLUTION

In the end it came down to the ASUS Chromebook C202; a ruggedized, small form-factor device that was built by ASUS for the classroom. With a best-in-class drop test rating from 3.9’ high, spill-proof keyboard and a modular design for easy on-site maintenance the ASUS C202 is built to last with minimal downtime and maintenance costs. In addition to its physical ruggedness, the ASUS C202 is built with a 180-degree hinge that does exactly what CJUHSD needs: it enhances student engagement. With a trusted platform module for hardware security and Google sandboxing for software security the ASUS C202 is extremely difficult to compromise, checking off another requirement from CJUHSD.

All of these features: the rugged, 180-degree hinge, TPM security, spill-proof keyboard, easy-grip design, modular design coupled with 10-hour battery life and intense preparation are just some of the reasons why CJUHSD has become so effective in integrating “relevant technology, viewed as such by the teachers” (Mike Bement CJUHSD Director of Technology).
