Perhaps its the most oddball and crazy Zenfone yet, but its a pretty one!!! The Zenfone 3 Ultra is unlike any other smartphone in India, its been designed for one purpose...and thats entertainment!!
Lets see how it fares on benchmarks.
Here we go -
1) Antutu -
Perhaps the oldest way to blindly bench any android device. Antutu has been on the scene since forever now, and always is evolving. It performs a series of tests for Graphics, UX, RAM, and CPU operations, and comes up with a mean value score.
And as with any modern phone, the Ultra can too do 10 finger screen touch.
2) Geekbench 4 -
This one is clearly aimed at just how fast or how dextrous the CPU really is. It checks on how the CPU manages several different tests using the many instruction sets the smartphone CPU might support.
Results here are really amazing, the Ultra is pretty close to previous flag-ships, despite it not being a flagship itself. Scoring exactly the same as the Samsung Galaxy S7 in the Single core test. The Snapdragon 652 is a mid-ranger solution that is tuned for adequate performance and 100% UI reliability....this the Zenfone Ultra does it really well, but packs in a Dual-channel 4GB RAM to kick a notch up!
3) Vellamo -
This is another but serious app focussed totally at how the UX performs. Its aimed at checking how fast a phone can process things at the most basics like browsing, multi-core processing etc...
Scores here show that the device is no performance back-grinder. Its got enough oomph under the hood for you to plough through more than just daily-dealers.
4) Quadrant -
Quadrant has been on the Android benchmark scene for quite some time now. Although it hasn't caught up with modern times as Antutu. It still is capable and runs almost 21 Processor intensive tests to test the dexterity of the SoC. Scoring is kind of on the boring side, and doesnt actually let you see the modern competition to your score.
Here, Zenfone 3 Ultra too shows its dependable and on-demand processing powers. This score is actually pretty good for a SD652.
5) GFX Benchmark -
Graphics is the most important aspect on Android, and its one the reasons android is largely successful. Implementing a separate GPU was the way to speed up UI and Games unlike Nokia's back in the day.
This benchmark tool is pretty cool and runs several GPU intensive tests. higher the FPS count, the better. And the ultra proves it right.
6) Gaming tests -
With a humungous large screen at 6.8 inches, gaming truly comes alive with the Zenfone 3 Ultra. The experience is truly immersive! Usually i would complain about how on-screen controllers took away some crucial visual elements, no complaints with this phone !!!
A) Asphalt Xtreme -
Its arguably one of the best Racing titles available on android, and forever has been evolving with time. Race is now taken offroad. The graphics are just amazing enough to wonder how far android has come along, by nearly being compared to last-gen consoles.
The game was buttery smooth at HDPI with 'Better Quality' settings, no lags whatsoever, even with a resource hungry screen-recorder app running at the back. No complaints here either.
B) Breakneck -
A futuristic pod-racer styled endless runner game, Breakneck is truly next-gen when it comes to graphics. Its able to generate superb and nearly current-gen like graphics. Its made possible by some intelligent rendering techniques. Honestly its this one game that I use on older and non-flagship phones to test smooth gaming capability.
WIthout a screen-recorder, the game ran at almost 60fps, but with the recorder, system was bogged down. Even though the recording below might been a little juddery, i assure you that the session while recording was flawlessly smooth enough.
C) Unkilled -
Here's some FPS action. A variant of the largely popular Dead-Trigger series, it packs in the same elements, but this time you can shoot automatically by just aiming at the Zombies. The graphics aren't that intensive but nearly has last-gen like visuals.
Zenfone 3 ultra is no hint of trouble at this game. The graphics are smooth and steady at all times. Its like the phone isnt even trying that hard!!!
D) Ridge Racer -
Okay, I have to confess, I am more into Racing games than Shoot-em-Up!. Ridge Racer is one of those titles which still packs in the essence of 90's arcade racing. It might have a little of Car micro-management (which i think sucks), but the racing experience is pretty much like the 90's old Need for Speed days.
The ultra had no hitch at rendering this game. It was smooth for a fret-free experience.
7) Battery -
The Zenfone 3 Ultra packs in a 4600 mAh battery, but keep in mind that it also packs in a large 6.8inch IPS display as well. So it was neccessary for this phone to have a large capacity battery, as the screen burns away most of the battery when entertainment is a large part of the equation on this phone.
The phone was able to keep up with my extravagant demands of gaming, movies and music, quite amazingly well!!! On a full charge with frugal usage, the phone managed to stay alive and kicking for more than a day. I'd still have like 20% at the end of the day before I go to sleep.
On the brightest sunny side of everything else, the phone has QuickCharge 3.0, and this is the most important factor that makes this phone a portable one. As you see, the phone easily managed to tank up as much as 60% under an hour, and thats astounding considering the fact that the battery is at 4600mAh capacity. I usually put the phone on charge after i get up in the morning, and its always at 70% or more when im about and away for work, within the hour. And with it I am able to get through the day without any fuss.
Conclusion -
As the specs goes, many feel that the device is underpowered for its price. Well for a moment i would agree too as there are much cheaper phones packing the same SD652. But this is not like the other phones out there, nor was this made for that category. Other phones dont pack in an 4k TV processor with a dedicated chip for audio as well, unless it was for a specific reason....
Its made with such precision, and the quality of the metal used, exudes the premium feel at one first ever touch. Its existance is purely made because there aren't any premium grade phones that fit all bills for an entertainment device. This is made for those who are constantly on the go and who keep digital entertainment as their paramount needs in life....
Well this phone does not at all dissappoint when it comes to what it can do in the 'real world', it does that and much more, which to find out, you need to experience it personally....
Let me know what you think about this awesome device, and what you think about this review!!!!!
