The Zenfone 3 Ultra is a well hyped smartphone & it has the exact same camera hardware as the Zenfone 3 Deluxe. So, has it met our expectations ? Let's find out !
We'll first check the samples one by one for both Front & Rear cameras. After that I'll give my review & tell you about the goods & the bads of this camera.
ASUS has really tried to push the limits with the camera this time by using a 23 megapixel Sony IMX318 sensor in the back. This is actually a very good sensor but, I was interested to see how good ASUS have made the image processing this time. The lens has an aperture of f-2.0 . Anyway here are some Sample shots taken by the rear camera of the Zenfone 3 Ultra.
Daylight:
... Low Light:
In the front ASUS has pushed an 8 megapixel sensor with the aperture of f-2.4 . Yes, though the Official Site mentions that the aperture is f-2.0, I came to know that it's actually f-2.4 during my testing. Anyway, it didn't made that much difference in real life. Coming to the samples now,
... Video Output
I have made a dedicated video to show the vide recording capabilities of the Zenfone 3 Ultra. Do note that, the device can shoot upto 4K @30fps but, these shots are taken in 1080P.
... The Review The Rear Camera: The Zenfone 3 Ultra has a pretty dope Rear Camera. The shot's look top notch as expected from a high end smartphone. You can shoot at full 23MP but you need to crack the ratio down to 4:3 . To shoot in 16:9, you need to crack the resolution down to 16MP.
The Auto Mode takes decent images I'll say but, the best shots always come with the Manual Mode. While a casual person will be pretty much satisfied with the Auto Mode, geeks will always look for better shots & that's where Manual Settings like Shutter Speed, ISO, White Balance(WB) & Manual Focus comes in. Good combination of these settings can make a huge difference in the shot. The Shutter Speed range in the Zenfone 3 Ultra is 32s-1/50000s.
However, in low light the Auto Mode does not perform well at all. You need to take the time to adjust the settings manually to get the best possible shots. Slow shutter speeds often result in better images with the right amount of ISO for shooting in low light. With the correct adjustment's, the rear camera gets the job done. But remember, if you're shooting with a slow shutter speed ( e.g. 1s-2s) you need steady hands.
The Front Camera: The 8MP Front Camera takes pretty good selfies in both indoor & outdoor conditions. I have no complains about the quality of front facing camera but, I have no idea why the specification sheet says that the aperture is f-2.0 when it's f-2.4 in reality.
Anyway, the image quality is good & can be tweaked using the Beatification Mode but, I'll prefer not to use it until you like the softning effect. But for girls, the Beautification Mode can be pretty useful as it also has many options for doing Virtual Makeover as well.
The Video Output: The Zenfone 3 Ultra can shoot 4K (30 fps), 1080P (60 fps & 30 fps), 720P (30fps) & even a 480P resolution is still available. I shot all of my footages in 1080P as my underpowered laptop will crash if I through 4K in it.
Anyway the video quality is good, the rear camera has OIS so the Stabilization is also very good. The front camera can shoot upto 1080P (30 fps) & it has good video output as well. But, I have seen Zenfone 3 Deluxe recorded videos & those looked slightly better. Definitely, the Snapdragon 820 is the reason behind this. Still, I'll say that the Zenfone 3 Ultra does a very good job in terms of video recording.
The Verdict
The Zenfone 3 Ultra is a great choice for people who are looking for a high end smartphone with a pretty dope camera that does a great job in terms of both Photography & Videography. Digging into the Manual settings can result into pretty good shots & the results are quite surprising as a smartphone camera. If you feel that 6.8 inches is too big for you, you can have a look at the 5.7 inch Zenfone 3 Deluxe that has the exaxt same camera hardware. Otherwise, go give the Zenfone 3 Ultra a shot.
So, that's it for the evaluation of the Camera in the Zenfone 3 Ultra. Give me a thumbs up if you liked it & let me know your views in the comment section below.
I'll be back soon with the full In-depth review of the Zenfone 3 Ultra so, keep checking back for that. In case you missed the Impressions article, I'm dropping the link below....
