500mb RAM is System Reserved this is the same for most of the Android Smartphones.
Use Mobile Manager Auto Start up feature to control Apps which stay awake, you can disable unwanted Apps which you dont require.
Its not about the amount of RAM available but about device performance without lags often, as almost all devices lags at times.
