The Marshmallow updates are finally here for most of our ASUS phones. It's one of the best and biggest Android Releases so far that manages to put forth a more complete Smartphone OS. While the FOTA updates are still ongoing, let's get you prepped for a proper and sucessfull update.

Here's what you need to do:

PART I : Firmware Over The Air

1) Backup your Data:

It's really essential that you backup your phone data before you begin the upgrade, athough you might say argue saying "Whats the point of an FOTA update, won't it retain data anyways??" Well, yes, but you need to be careful about the sensitive data. And due to any unforseen circumstances, there could be a chance that the update isnt a sucess.

That's when you'd think you'd had better taken a Back-up. Check this Video out if you need a one-stop solution to backup data:

2) Factory Reset it (Before and After):

With using any Android Smartphone, you'd know that it quite gets bloated up with miscellaneous files and apps that you've never used. It could be a possibility that after the last minor update you haven't had a chance to factory reset it then or in a long while, this could leave fragmented files in the system and could conflict with the future update.

Having a clean phone will ensure that you have a fast, clean, uninterrupted update to Marshmallow. Also ofcourse its recommended that you Factory reset it again after the update for smooth operation.

3) Mandatory Factory Reset for Encrypted Phones:

phone-encryption.jpg

If you have encrypted your Zenfone, then it is essential that you back up your data, and factory reset the device before attempting updation. If the device is still left encrypted then you shall lose all encrypted files (all phone data) after the update.

4) Keep you Phone Charged to a 100%:

It is highly advised that you charge your phone before attempting any update, and especially with huge updates like Marshamallow, it could take forever to install the update fully.

Screenshot_2016-06-23-16-06-03.jpg

And if your phone has a power failure during an update, it could be left hanging in the air without completion, and the phone may never restart at all. Essentially it could also be irrepairably bricked!!!

5) Restart your phone before downloading the update:

With a lot of system 'Up-time', a lot of system resources may have been pooled for various processes. The RAM might be strained with handling huge apps that you though you might have exited from. And if with limited RAM with as much as 1GB, it gets difficult with juggling active processes and may cause the phone to hang and interupt the download.

It really helps the system to write to the storage faster if the system has started afresh, hence the download would not be constrained.

6) Download the FOTA on a highspeed dependable WiFi:

The FOTA files need to be complete and intact before attempting any upgrades. There could be a remote chance that the file may not be fully downloaded if if the download was interrupted with speed drops and hangups.

o-HIGH-SPEED-INTERNET-facebook.jpg

Even as much as a 'bit' of data getting flipped might cause the update process to fail. Always ensure you have full speed at downloading firmware, and keep an eye on the download completion. Plus, downloading over a Wifi connection won't cost even remotely as much as over a 3G or 4G connection.

Part II: Offline/Manual Firmware Installation (SD-Card method):

To those who donot have access to proper internet speeds for the in-phone FOTA download, you can download the official ROM for your Zenfone from ASUS' support website.

1) Make sure you download the correct ROM:

It is highly crucial that you download the correct ROM version and of Correct region code. For India, the region code is denoted as 'WW'.

fwaredload1.jpg

Ensure that you do not download any other ROM with a different region code such as JP, and CN.

2) Update to latest ROM before Marshmallow:

It is mandatory to follow the update sequence. Which means that you can't skip a small update in favor of a larger update directly. The Updates take old dependancies to work and install. With missing files, chances are that the next update could fail.

Hence, always read the requisities of the ROM you wish to install. Follow and learn the instructions given above the ROM download link on the Support Website. If you have any doubts, you can always question us on Zentalk before installing the ROM.

3) Place the ROM on the Internal Storage:

Once downloaded, place the downloaded Zip file on the root of the SD-card, that means on a Computer, you dont need to put it inside any folders, just paste it on the Internal Storage after right-clicking the Internal Storage icon.

4) Do not tamper with the Zip file:

Once downloaded, do not tamper with the Zip file by opening it, and rezipping. Also, do not rename the update Zip file name to anything other than what was originally when you downloaded it.

5) Restart phone to invoke update prompt:

Once you have pasted the correctly downloaded Zip file, restart the device for the Update prompt to pop up.

Make sure you have charged up your Zenfone to a 100% before your you go ahead with the update.

Part - III: Actions after update completion -

1) Make sure you factory reset your zenfone as soon as the update is sucessful. The Factory reset ensures that the system is defaulted to the new OS and that it doesnt have to deal with old system files. This also frees up more space on the internal storage, and ensures allround smooth functionality

- Also ensure you have a clean/formatted SD Card. With old OS dependancies, chances are they might conflict with reading them properly with Marshmallow. Backup all user files, and format it to get rid of old system generated files.

- MOST IMPORTANT action: ALWAYS CALIBRATE THE BATTERY AFTER UPDATES. To calibrate, all you have to do is:

   1) Discharge the phone with whatever charge left after the update, let the phone turn off itself when out of power.

cali2.jpg

   2) Without any charge the phone will refuse to start. Keep on trying to start it, untill it can turn on no more.

   3) Connect the phone to the box-supplied stock charger to charge it up, using with low output and incompatible high output chargers is discouraged.

   4) Charge it up to a display denoted 100%, do not turn on the phone while charging. Once fully charged up, turn on the device.

cali3.jpg

   5) Check if the battery percentage is a 100% once booted in. If not then put it to charge again and wait for it to show a 100%. Restart the device, and then see if you have a 100%. Continue the process till your phone shows a 100% after restarting.

   6) Now, Discharge the Device with power use till auto-poweroff. And Charge the phone 'Again' to a 100% without restarting. Once fully charged, turn on the device, and now you can use it normally.

   7) WARNING: Lithium-Polymer batteries have low voltage potentiality - which means consistently running down to as low as 0.5 volts will probably kill the battery, and wont charge back up properly to a 100% physically. Only run battery calibration after installing large updates.

    8) Also note that: Li-Po batteries also degrade over time in battery performance, degradation is faster with consistent intensive usage.
INSTALLING UPDATES & UPGRADING TO MARSHMALLOW WILL NOT RE-INSTATE THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES TO REVIVE THE ORIGINAL BATTERY PERFORMANCE!

With these steps , you are ensured that you get into the Marshmallow experience without any hiccups. Tell us about your thoughts on the new Marshmallow update. Also let us know your problems that you could come across, lets discuss it here....& Earn Extra Credits!!!!

Hi Zen_Ro,
1. Battery calibration helps show actual percentage battery life in Phone right?
If I don't do battery calibrate, sometimes later it will be done itself.
2. Your Previous article about battery helped me. Before I always discharge my to less then 15% before start charging. After your post I never drain my phones battery less than 35% and charge my phone anytime if I see charger somewhere near me.
3. I or we all would be happy if most of phones change to all of ZenFones will get marshmallow update(Zenfone5 got many Android 6.0 custom roms all are best thanka to developers but the test of android 6.0 on top of ZenUI willbbe more more more sweet and yummy).

Hi Zen_Ro,

If I don ...

if you dont do the calibration the battery counter will behave erratically for even months without calibration....if you charge the phone at low percentages (at about 15-20 onwards) always then technically a calibration can be avoided....but a calibration will help achieve good results quicker

I really like these tips. Quite essential before installing a massive update like Marshmallow.
Also, when it comes to Marshmallow, there are quite a lot of features which I like.
Few of them:
#1) Doze - I like this feature because in this mode, the phone enters the sleep mode when it's idle, thus ensuring better battery life.
#2) Power and Boost - In Lollipop, we could just clear the running apps and we had to separately boost the device. But Marshmallow has integrated both the features ensuring that our phone becomes super-fast.
#3) Adoptable Storage - I am aware that this feature is yet to be implemented on Zenfones, but, it's a great idea to have this feature as it'll make sure that we get abundant storage.

Lastly, waiting for Marshmallow update on my Zenfone Selfie
