Today, I am sharing with you how to take care of our Zenfone batteries and understanding what battery calibration is really all about and how it can help us lengthen our battery life and its performance.

But first let us learn how to take care of our Zenfone Batteries through the following tips below:

  • ·        PROPER CHARGING TIPS

(Do not let it stay at 100% for an extended period, you can use the phone lightly while charging, this also applies to power banks)

Just plug it in. It does not matter what % you charge, or what % you unplug. But do avoid obscene levels of discharge, such as fast, frequent full discharges, as this will quickly degrade your battery.

All ZenFones have a dedicated charging IC that regulates voltage and current. Whether your charger is fast, stock or slow, the IC will manage. However, do not let a battery stay plugged in at 100% for an extended period oftime, as this may degrade the battery capacity due to excess heat.

You can use the phone while charging, however, always limit your use to light tasks such as texting, and take into account the precautions regarding low mA chargers and USB ports.

Power banks should also be treated as regular chargers, which means proper charging tips also apply to them.

  • ·        CHARGE CYCLES

(Cycles are consumed by %; typical battery has 500 cycles)

Each Li-on battery has a limited amount of charge cycles. One charge cycle is consumed when you drain a batteryfrom 100% to 0% then recharge back to 100%. Typically, a smartphone battery is rated above 500 full charge cycles.

You can consume charge cycles by %.If you drain your phone to 50% and recharge, you still have half a charge cycle(50%) left. Likewise, if you drain it to 80%, you have one-fifths of a chargecycle (20%) left.

  • ·        "DRAIN BEFORE YOU CHARGE" MYTH (is not true for Li-Ion Batt)

The "drain completely before charging" procedure is only for old NiCD and NiMH batteries. This is because they develop a "memory effect" wherein you can only use them up to the point where they were last drained, unless completely reconditioned.

Recharging a partially charged Lithium-ion battery does not cause harm because there is no "memory effect".

Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion batteries than one deep discharge, because there is a stress factor that can degrade the battery capacity when it is frequently discharged.

And the good news is all Zenfones are using lithium-ion batteries.

  • ·        LONG-TERM STORAGE

(Store at 40% charge level)

Li-on battery packs are best stored at 40% charge, because of Lithium-ion chemistry. And yes, this is true based on my personal experienced charging my Zenfone 5 (2yrs old now), Zenfone Selfie (1.5 years old) and Zenfone 3 at 40% low to 100%.

If you want to know exactly why, google search can provide us more details, which however is a long read though.

Hope this helps...
and since this is already a long read...will share with you the Battery Callibration tips next post.

I agree as this has been what the users believe because of the old battery types.

Wow Thank you Ma'am. I was about to create a thread wherein proper charging is one of the topic. And oops, looks like I'm doing the full discharge-charge thing. But somehow, it works for me Ma'am for many years now. Should I stop doing it? I usually charge 10% and pull it out when it reaches 100%.

You're welcome. Anyway, doing this kind of charging works fine as it avoids stressing your battery however do not forget to do at least once or twice the draining of batt to zero and charging to full 100% in a month or so to calibrate your batt.

The green led indicator at 90% doesnt mean your battery is already full. It only shows that youre batt is now on the almost full stat thus enabling the led to turn green, you can either wait few more minutes till it reaches 100% or unplug it. Charging at that state becomes slower than when it started from low batt though.
