HDR, or high dynamic range, is a technique used in photograpy to make sure that the highlights (bright) and shadows (dark) on your photo doesn't lose detail. It's mostly used for backlit scenarios, where your light source is behind the subject, or when there is a huge difference between the dark and bright elements in the photo.
With the ZenFone 4 series, a new (hidden) feature in the PixelMaster Camera is Low Light HDR. It's part of the AutoHDR feature. Since a photo speaks more than words, let's head right on to a comparison.
Here's a photo taken by the ZenFone 4 Pro in low light using Auto mode, with the AutoHDR feature disabled. Notice how the highlights in the photo got blown out.
Now here's a photo taken by the same phone, the same location and settings, but with AutoHDR (and low light HDR). Now the blown-out highlights is gone, and you can now see the words on the signages as well as the store interiors.
We tried this as well with the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, and got similar results. Here's one with AutoHDR off and blown out highlights:
And here's the result with AutoHDR (and Low Light HDR) enabled.
Pretty cool right? So how do you use this mode? Simple: just keep AutoHDR turned on your camera. Because of ASUS' exclusive SuperPixel Engine, you can always take great low-light photos even with bright lighting!
Low Light HDR is currently available in ZenFone 4 Pro, ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro rear cameras. Try it out and show us your shots taken using this feature!
