[NUC] Troubleshooting Audio Issues on NUC

If you encounter audio-related issues with your NUC, we recommend trying the following steps first:

 

1. Update BIOS: Please visit the ASUS support site to download and update your BIOS to the latest version. (Refer to: [NUC] BIOS Update and Recovery Instructions for NUC).       
2. Update Graphics Card/Display Audio Driver: Install the latest Intel Graphics driver, which usually includes Display Audio. (Refer to: How to Install an Intel® Graphics Driver in Windows® 10 & Windows 11* ).       
3. Update Audio Driver: Install the latest Realtek High Definition Audio driver. This driver is required for the front panel 3.5mm audio jack (for microphones and headphones).

    *Some NUC models may not have a 3.5mm audio jack; please check your device specifications first.       
4. Cross-test with Different Devices: Connect different headphones, headsets, or microphones directly to the NUC's audio jack. This helps rule out external device malfunctions.

We recommend using MyASUS to automatically detect and install the latest drivers. Alternatively, you can manually download and install drivers from the ASUS support site .

 

Frequently Asked Questions

No Sound When Connecting HDMI Devices (TV, Monitor, Receiver)
● Confirm Audio Drivers are Functioning Correctly

               1. Right-click the Start button on your desktop and select Device Manager.

                  

              2. Check if the display adapter under Display adapters (e.g., Intel(R) UHD Graphics) and Display Audio under Sound, video and game controllers are functioning properly. 

                  If not, please reinstall the drivers.

                 

 

● Set the HDMI Device as the 'Default Device'

               1. Right-click the Start button on your desktop and select Settings.

                  

               2. Click System and select Sound.

                   
               3. Select More sound settings.

                  

               4. Ensure that the HDMI device is set as the Default Device in the Playback tab. 

                   If not, right-click the device, select Set as Default Device, and then click OK.      
                  

 

● Check Hardware and Cables

              1. Try re-plugging or replacing the HDMI cable.

              2. If playing 4K/60 Hz content, ensure you are using an HDMI 2.0 (Category 2) or higher specification cable.

              3. Verify that your TV or receiver's audio source setting is switched to 'Digital Output' or the corresponding HDMI port.

          

● Check TV Audio Settings

              Some TVs require changing the audio output from TV to Digital.

 

3.5mm Audio Jack Malfunction (Headphones, Headsets, or Microphones Unresponsive)
● Check if HD Audio is Enabled in BIOS

               1. Press F2 during boot-up to enter BIOS Setup.

               2. Go to Advanced > Onboard Devices.

               

               3. Confirm that HD Audio is enabled.

               

              4. Press F10 to save and exit.

              

 

● Update Realtek High Definition Audio Driver

            We recommend using MyASUS to automatically detect and install the latest drivers. Alternatively, you can manually download and install drivers from the ASUS support site.

 

● Enable Audio Jack Detection Notification to Redefine Jack Properties

               Often, this happens because the wrong device type is selected for the audio jack (e.g., selecting a headset as a microphone). We recommend enabling Jack detection when device is plugged in in the Realtek Audio Console to redefine jack properties.

                1. Type Realtek Audio Console in the desktop Search bar and open the app.

                2. Select Device advanced settings and set Enable Jack detection when device is plugged in to On.

                   

                3. When a device is plugged into the audio jack, select the correct audio device and click OK.

                

 

● Set Realtek(R) Audio (or a Realtek-related device) as the Default Device in Sound Settings

               1. Right-click the Start button on your desktop and select Settings.

                  

               2. Click System and select Sound.

                   

              3. Select More sound settings.

                   

               4. Ensure that Realtek(R) Audio (or the relevant Realtek device) is set as the Default Device in the Playback tab. 

                   If not, right-click the device, select Set as Default Device, and then click OK.

                   

 

Static or Noise from 3.5mm Audio Jack with Headphones or Speakers

   1. Try using different headphones or speakers, and test with a different audio cable.   
   2. Update the Realtek High Definition Audio driver, and make sure the jack and plug specifications match and are fully inserted.

   3. If the issue persists, we suggest updating the BIOS and the Intel Graphics Driver, then testing again.

 

'Code 28' Error Appears in Device Manager

    Code 28 usually indicates that the driver for that hardware device is either not installed or corrupted.

    1. Right-click the Start button on your desktop and select Device Manager.

         

    2. Right-click the device with the yellow exclamation mark and select Properties.

        

   3. On the General tab, you can find the error code in the Device status box.

        

   4. Install the driver. We recommend using MyASUS to automatically detect and install the latest drivers. Alternatively, you can manually download and install drivers from the ASUS support site.
