[NUC] Troubleshooting: System Screen Hangs During BIOS Update via Windows Update
Applicable Models
Models & Safe BIOS Versions:
- ROG NUC 16 Edition 20: Safe on BIOS version 0022 or later
- ROG NUC 16: Safe on BIOS version 0022 or later
- ROG NUC 2025: Safe on BIOS version 0034 or later
- ASUS NUC 15 Performance: Safe on BIOS version 0034 or later
Affected Versions: BIOS versions prior to the safe versions listed above (Systems already on the safe version or later will not experience this issue)
Symptom
When updating the system BIOS via Windows Update, the screen may stay on the "Updating system firmware / Do not power down the system!" page and appear to be temporarily stuck or unresponsive (as shown in Figure 1).

Please rest assured: even if the screen appears to have stopped, the firmware update is still running normally in the background — this is not a hardware failure. Simply wait for the progress bar at the bottom of the screen to reach 100%, and the update will complete successfully.
Workaround & Solutions
To resolve or prevent the system screen hang issue, please refer to the corresponding actions below depending on your current situation:
a. For Users Who Are Already Experiencing the Screen Hang
If your screen is currently stuck on the "Updating system firmware" page, please follow these steps:
1. Check the Progress Bar: Locate the Flash update progress bar at the bottom of the screen (red box in Figure 1).
2. Wait for 100% Completion: Ensure the progress bar has reached 100% (fully completed)
3. Force Restart: Once you have confirmed the progress bar is at 100%, press and hold the Power Button for 10 seconds to force the system to power down, then turn it back on. 
CRITICAL WARNING: Do NOT force shut down or cut off power if the progress bar has not reached 100%. Doing so may result in an incomplete firmware update and cause system boot failure.
4. Verify BIOS Version: After restarting, check whether the BIOS has been updated to the required version for your specific model:
A. For ROG NUC 16 Edition 20 / ROG NUC 16: Verify it is version 0022.
B. For ROG NUC 2025/ ASUS NUC 15 Performance: Verify it is version 0034.
C. If not, please follow the methods in section b to update it manually.
b. For Users Who Have Not Encountered the Issue Yet (Preventative Measures)
To prevent the screen hang from occurring, we strongly recommend manually updating the BIOS to the latest version using one of the following recommended methods:
Method 1: Update via EXE file under Windows (Recommended)
1. Go to the official support page and download the latest BIOS EBU for Windows according to your model:
A. For ROG NUC 16 Edition 20 / ROG NUC 16: Download "JNARLR79.0022 EBU for Windows".
B. For ROG NUC 2025/ ASUS NUC 15 Performance: Download "JNARLR79.0034 EBU for Windows"
2. Run the EXE file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Method 2: Update via the built-in BIOS update function using the CAP file
1. Press F7 during boot-up to enter the update interface.
2. Select the downloaded CAP file (version 0022 or 0034 depending on your model) to perform the update.
Method 3: Update via MyASUS
1. Open MyASUS.
2. Go to System Update → Latest.
3. Download the latest BIOS EBU.
4. Run the EBU file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
