1. What is Home Assistant?

Home Assistant is an open-source smart home platform that runs locally, offering the following benefits:

  • Operates 24/7 on your router, ensuring data privacy and security.
  • Supports thousands of devices and services (lights, plugs, AC, cameras, speakers, routers, etc.).
  • Allows you to control and automate devices from different brands on a single dashboard.
  • Lets you set automation rules based on time, sensors, location, weather, and more.
  • Customizable dashboards provide beautiful control interfaces for your phone, tablet, or computer.

2. Installation and Initial Setup

2.1 Start Installation from the Router

Log in to your router's management interface via your browser, go to the AI Board tab, and click the [Install] button for Home Assistant.

The system will automatically download and install Home Assistant.

2.2 Access the Home Assistant Web Interface

After installation, click the [Go to] button on the AI Board, or open your browser and go to http://<your AI board hostname>:8123

The AI Board hostname is shown in the interface. In the example above, it's aiboard-ANPU.local, but it may differ for your router.

     2.3 Home Assistant Initial Setup

When you see the Welcome screen, click [Create my smart home].

     2.4 Create the First User

Enter Name / Username / Password, then click [Create account].

Please create a new admin account and password (recommended: at least 10 characters). Home Assistant and your router use separate passwords.

     2.5 Set Router Location

The location is stored locally. Some integrations use this info to provide localized services (like weather).

     2.6 Set Region

Home Assistant will automatically apply local settings for timezone, temperature units, etc., based on your region.

     2.7 Data Sharing Preferences

You can choose to enable or disable Basic analytics / Usage / Statistical data / Diagnostics.

These are anonymous improvement programs; you can turn them all off and still use Home Assistant normally.

2.8 Finish and Enter the Main Screen

After completing the initial setup, you'll see the Overview page. On first login, only the user card is shown.

It's normal for device status to show as Unknown—no devices or integrations have been added yet.

Next, you can proceed to the next step: Connect your router. If you want to skip the router and connect other IoT devices directly, you can also refer to the AI Board Overview.
