Frigate is an open-source NVR (Network Video Recorder) featuring real-time AI object detection as its core capability. All video processing happens locally on your hardware, ensuring camera streams never leave your home. This guide series will help you install, configure, and integrate Frigate with Home Assistant to trigger events using AI object detection.
Frigate Features
- AI Object Detection: Frigate’s main function is real-time object detection using local AI. It can accurately identify objects in your camera feed, such as people, cars, pets, and more.

- Hardware Acceleration: Frigate supports hardware acceleration using NPU, enabling efficient video analysis with low CPU usage and high performance, even with multiple cameras.
- Highly Customizable: You can set detection zones for each camera, choose which object types to detect, and adjust various parameters to fit your needs.

2. Install Frigate
- Log in to the AI Board UI and click the Frigate install button.

2. After first logging in to Frigate, no camera feeds are shown?
This is normal, as Frigate does not have any cameras configured by default. Please refer to the next guide Set Up Frigate Cameras for setup instructions.
3. After first logging in to Frigate, clicking Settings does nothing?
Try logging out and back in from the Frigate management interface. This usually resolves the issue.
You’ll need to delete the Frigate container and config volume, then reinstall Frigate. After reinstalling, a new random password will be generated, which you can find in the container log.
Note: This process will erase all settings, so you’ll need to reconfigure your cameras and other parameters.
- 1. Go to Portainer, find the Frigate container (default name is formal-frigate-asus), select it, and click the red Remove button to delete the container.

- 2. After removing the container, click Volumes on the left to enter the Volumes page. Find the volume named formal_frigate_config_asus select it, and click the red Remove button to delete the volume.

- 3. Go to the AI Board page and reinstall Frigate.

- 4. After installation, check the container log for the new initial password.

5. Frigate installed but not used immediately, can’t find the initial random password
The initial password is only generated and recorded in the container log during the first installation. If too much time has passed, the information in the log may have been overwritten. In this case, you can set the Lines to a larger number (e.g., 1000000) in the container log interface, toggle the Auto refresh logs switch several times, and then enter Password in the search bar. If you still can’t find it, please refer to the solution for forgotten passwords above.
