[Motherboard] Troubleshooting Overheating and Fan Issues
The stability of the motherboard, CPU, and memory is closely related to heat dissipation。 Overheating can lead to decreased performance, system instability, or unexpected crashes。
This article will introduce common causes of overheating and troubleshooting methods to help you quickly diagnose problems and improve heat dissipation, ensuring stable system operation. 。
I. Common Problem Symptoms
II. Software Monitoring and Observation
III. Troubleshooting Methods for Abnormal Problems
IV. Prevention Recommendations
I. Common Problem Symptoms:
1. Computer continuously overheats abnormally
2. Fan runs at high speed but performance decreases or overheats
3. Abnormal fan noise (grinding sound, clicking sound)
4. Fan does not spin or spins erratically
5. Computer suddenly shuts down or crashes
II. Software Monitoring and Observation:
During hardware maintenance and performance optimization, real-time monitoring using Armoury Crate software, including CPU temperature, VRM load, fan speed, and memory usage, is crucial for diagnosing system anomalies and performing preventative maintenance.
For instructions on its operation, please refer to:[Motherboard] Armoury Crate (Ver 6.0) Introduction
(Example: PRIME-X870-P)
III. Troubleshooting Methods for Abnormal Issues:
1. Check for poor heatsink contact or cracked thermal paste:
1. Inspect the CPU cooler for improper installation, loose clips, or issues such as cracked or unevenly applied thermal paste, or missing AIO stickers, all of which can cause overheating due to poor heatsink contact。
For installation instructions, please refer to:[Motherboard] When assembling a CPU cooler, please ensure all screws are fully tightened to avoid system instability。
2. Check if dust has accumulated on the case or CPU fan, causing airflow obstruction:
Over time, dust accumulates in computers, reducing the airflow efficiency of the heatsink and affecting heat dissipation。 Therefore, regular cleaning of the CPU fan, fins, and inlet/outlet fans (front, back, top, and bottom) is necessary to
improve the computer's cooling performance。
At each air inlet and outlet of the Chassis/PSU:

2. The fan is running at high speed, but its efficiency is decreasing or it is overheating:
1. Confirm CPU Cooler Performance:
Confirm the CPU's actual power consumption。 Since the CPU's TDP (Thermal Design Power) rating doesn't always represent actual power consumption, some high-end CPUs can have a much higher actual full-load power consumption than their TDP。
In such cases, upgrading to a large tower air cooler or using a 240mm (dual-fan)/360mm (triple-fan) all-in-one liquid cooler is recommended to avoid computer instability or restart issues。
2. Check for dry or poorly applied thermal paste:
When a CPU has been used for an extended period, the thermal paste may age or be applied unevenly, leading to low heat transfer efficiency at the contact surface and causing overheating due to poor contact with the heatsink,
Please refer to the following:[Motherboard] When assembling a CPU cooler, please ensure all screws are fully tightened to avoid system instability。
3. Cleaning dust that clogs fins and affects airflow:
When the heatsink fins and fans on the motherboard/CPU are heavily dusty, it can obstruct airflow and cause the computer to overheat. In this case, it is necessary to use an air blower to remove the dust from the CPU/motherboard heatsink fins and
intake fan to improve airflow and increase heat dissipation。
4. Confirm internal convection cooling of the casing:
The basic principle of airflow in a computer case is: cool air in (from the front, bottom, and sides)hot air out (from the rear and top). Therefore, it is recommended to check whether the case Fan/CPU tower fan is installed in the correct direction
and to check if the case cables are too messy and obstructing the airflow, preventing the heat from being discharged smoothly from inside the case。
3. The fan is making abnormal noises (friction sound, clicking sound).
1. Check for aging fan bearings or fan damage:
If the fan is not rotating properly or making abnormal noises, it is recommended to replace the fan or send it for repair in a timely manner。
2. Check if the casing cables are jamming the fan blades:
If necessary, the internal cables of the PC should be secured or relocated to prevent them from continuously jamming the fan, which could cause fan malfunction or abnormal speed。
4. The fan is not turning or its speed fluctuates.
1. Check if the BIOS settings are incorrect:
If the BIOS fan speed curve is set too low or automatic speed control is disabled, it is recommended to switch to PWM mode。
2. Test if the problem is with the CPU/system fan itself:
You can try changing the fan slot or using a different fan to test。
3. Check if the motherboard fan slot is damaged:
You can try changing the CPU_OPT, CHA_FAN, or SYS_FAN sockets, or using an external fan controller for testing.
5. The computer suddenly shuts down or crashes.
1. Check if the overheat protection mechanism has been triggered:
Armoury Crat software can be used to check whether hardware components such as the CPU, motherboard, and VRM have triggered protection mechanisms due to overheating。
2. Check if the power supply wattage is insufficient:
When using a high-end CPU and graphics card in your computer, please refer to the official website for recommended wattage, You can refer to [Motherboard/Graphics Card] How to install a graphics card on a motherboar
To prevent the graphics card from shutting down or crashing due to insufficient wattage under high load。
3 Check for memory or overclocking issues:
First, reseat the memory and confirm that the CPU or memory conforms to QVL, please refer to [Motherboard] How to check the list of CPUs/memory supported by your motherboard (QVL),
And try restoring the BIOS to factory settings, please refer to [Motherboard/Desktop Computer] How to Restore BIOS Settings
IV. Prevention Recommendations:
1. Clean the fans and heatsinks annually。
2. Regularly check BIOS fan settings and update drivers。
3. If the motherboard uses a high-power platform such as a CPU or graphics card (GPU), prioritize a high-performance case and air/liquid cooling solution。
4. For unusual fan noise or fan malfunction, it is recommended to immediately stop the system and send it for repair or replacement to avoid damaging the motherboard or graphics card and causing safety risks。
